Shelter Statistics

The Numbers

Looking at shelter statistics is important for the community to understand the challenges their local agencies may face. A general live release rate number with no knowledge of how we got there does little to improve perception on the realities we face. Lake County Animal Care and Control, for example, has an overall live release rate of 62% for the 2019 year. This included a rate that involves 84% of dogs leaving in favorable outcomes. Sadly, that leaves only 42% of cats leaving in favorable outcomes.

So what do we do?

Our community cat program will help dramatically. It is imperative to continue its operation to slow the overpopulation problem Lake County has. We also realize that we will never be able to transfer out our problem. We need to slow animal population growth to better manage the issues here. Comparing older statistics with the community cat program shows a total live release rate of 75%. Looking to today, we have done 222 community cat surgeries for the 2019 year. This puts our cat release rate at 53.54%, a jump of 11%! Our total live release rate gains a respectable 4.2% to 66.26%. This program was largely closed for 8 months. Those 8 months provided for 38 of the 222 surgeries. What could a strong year of the program do to our release rate? Quick math shows that if we average an obtainable 35 surgeries a month for a year our cat live release rate would increase to 60% and an overall release rate of 69.33%. From January to March 12, 2020 we have averaged 36 surgeries for the 3 months. Since Sept. 2019 we averaged 41.

What are we doing?

Continued push for community cat surgeries. This program will greatly alter the outcomes of our shelter. The clinic that performs the surgeries for our community cats also perform health evaluations to the animals within the shelter. This allows the shelter to understand what medical issues are truly manageable and treatable. This will reduce needless euthanasia due to lack of knowledge. The shelter is also in the process of transferring to a shelter management program that provides better resources for looking and managing all facets of a modern shelter.
