May is CalFresh Awareness Month

Lake County Continues Effort to Reduce Hunger, Boost Nutrition

Lake County, Ca (April 24, 2018) –

May is “CalFresh Awareness Month,” a month of public outreach to increase awareness and enrollment in CalFresh, California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Eating healthy on a budget can be hard, and CalFresh can help!

In Lake County, where more than 64,000 people reside, it is estimated that only about two-thirds of those eligible are receiving CalFresh.  Many households may be unaware that they qualify.  For example, a family of four making up to $4,100 per month may be eligible for CalFresh.

Families on CalFresh choose and purchase their own food from grocers using the EBT food card, which works much like an ATM card.  Local Farmer’s Markets also accept CalFresh, and can double your spending power with market match funds (  Not only will you be eating healthy, you’ll be supporting your local farmers!

You can also get nutritious, affordable recipes at, or by visiting Lake County Social Services during the month of May to pick up some FREE recipe cards from our lobby.  We will also be hosting a “Rethink Your Drink” event on May 16th from 8 am to 5 pm – a Statewide Day of Action to raise awareness about the health effects of sugary drinks and the benefits of replacing these drinks with water.  Stop by and check it out!
